Angels from Ashes: Hour of the Wolf

~ Book One of the Sacred Messenger Series ~

by Karen Hulene Bartell

True love is like a ghost.

Many believe in it, but few encounter it.

Chloe Clark stumbles on both but, burned by romance and riddled with low self-esteem, she's unable to recognize true love when it finds her. Agreeing to care for her great-aunt Edwina, she travels to Door County, Wisconsin. There she meets Hud, a charismatic Menominee Indian man, who initiates her in sunset cruises on Lake Michigan, the aurora borealis, his tribe's Wolf clan, and the importance of faith, family, and love.
At her great-aunt's antiquated house, Chloe learns of her family's roles in the tragic Peshtigo Fire of 1871 and the miracles at the Our Lady of Good Help Shrine. Things get frightening when she accidentally summons the spirits of two restless relatives who begin manipulating her emotions.
Faced with the still-unsolved murder of her great-aunt's sister at age fourteen, an ongoing family feud from six decades before, and a vengeful phantom, Chloe must help her ancestors find peace to be freed of their grasp. Can she realize that peace and find true love with Hud?

Praise for Angels from Ashes: Hour of the Wolf

"Angels from Ashes: Hour of the Wolf is a fascinating book. A blend of love, history, the divine, dark forces, human nature, and even some space science. I have enjoyed other books by Karen Hulene Bartell and she delivered again with powerful writing, charming plot, and vibrant characters set against the serene and enchanting background of a beautiful Wisconsin countryside. The mystery, the twists and turns, are persistent throughout and will have you guess and turn pages from beginning to the end. And what an end . . . well, you'll have to read the book for that."
~ Ica Iova , author of award-winning Boundaries, and She Never Got To Say Goodbye

"Karen Bartell is a fabulous writer of quite a few page turners at this point, but Angels from Ashes: Hour of the Wolf is one of her best thus far. Love, family, relationship, joy, and forgiveness. That's it . . . well except for tying up those wonderful ingredients for life with a delicious story. Or should I say stories within a story as Mrs. Bartell's artistic strong point comes through yet again. Can her characters in today's world be interconnected with those of another time? Yes. How about with spirits caught between then and now? Yes.
"So how is all this relevant to anything? The doubts and insecurity of a young woman who has had her heart broken is real and something many can relate to. People searching for love and pushing it away through fear or the inability to forgive . . . These are real struggles; struggles of people throughout history. Through her use of real historic events and places she has made so vibrant and real the thread that binds all of us. The troubled spirits, still experiencing life's hurts and in need of reconciliation with the living are the tie that binds stories of people past and present. Is there victory in any of this? Of course . . . this is a story that stirs the heart and soul. The hurt and fear can always be defeated through the nurturing and support of persistent love, the strength and unity of family, and prayer. Mrs. Bartell has incorporated these ingredients into the dough of a slice of life and turned it into a joy to read."
      ~ Mary Rotolo

"Ghosts righting wrongs in beautiful Door County is only part of the story that you will experience from the comfort of your own home. Bartell explores the history of this unique area and takes us along with her. A great trip!
"Mystery, history, ghosts and romance. True love or lies? All to be discovered in this exciting tale of righting wrongs from beyond the grave."
